Well I had a major goal accomplished this week, ran the international half marathon with my wife and finished in under 3 hours.
I read a blog where a four time marathoner was considering her run as a dismal failure, because she came in at 4:33????
Come on, every runner knows you will have good runs and bad runs, you have to take each run as you get them, and find the positive.
If you are a professional runner, then ok be upset, but if you run for yourself, then get a grip, you don't know how good you have it.
So is the glass half full?
My glass is all full as I did the half marathon and finished, and I got to run with my wife.

This blog is intended to be helpful to all ages. However, as I am over 60+ I thought it will be expressly helpful to people of my same generation, as we have alot of the same experiences in life.

A sense of satisfaction
It is with a great deal of satisfaction that I report, that both Brenda and I completed the International Detroit Half Marathon in 2:55:09. We ran together and enjoyed it together, what a fun run.
This 13.1 miles was run for personal satisfaction and the accomplishment of a major task, along with doing something that will improve our health and well being for years to come.
To those of your who say I could never do that, I say bull two years ago I could not run more that 5 steps, but with dedication and hard work, I have finished my second half marathon, this one being even more of a challenge than the first.
I worked, smoked, and ate and drank everything that was bad for you for 30 years.
Now at 63 about to be 64 I can run a half marathon and I only occasionally eat and drink bad things.
You did not think I would turn over a complete new leaf did you?
What is next on my goal list? Not a bucket list, as I do to intend to die.
Don' t know, going to take a couple of weeks to figure that out.
However, I will still continue to run and exercise for my health.
Would not mind running the Disney half marathon?
Need to hit the lottery first.
Maybe that is my ext goal? Hit the lottery?
Stranger things have happened.

Doing something for your self
Most of us at our advanced age, have spent out entire lives doing things for other people. Kids mothers fathers, grand kids.
Well, in two days on Sunday October 21 2012 my wife and I do something for ourselves.
We run the international Detroit 1/2 marathon.
We have been training and working hard these last few weeks, especially may wife. There was a time a few weeks ago that she did not know if she could make the race, not enough training.
I on the other hand have been focused and since may, have logged almost 500 miles of training.
We do not expect to win, we do not expect to post a great time.
We do however expect to finish, and we will run side by side and work to get each other through the race to the finish line.
You know what?
That is the real goal, is to finish and do something for ourselves.
I keep using the saying grin with the big dogs ! It basically means, you can' t run with the big dogs if you don't get off the porch.
Well, we are off the porch and are running with the big dogs.
No I consider us the big dogs, at 63 and 58, we are the big dogs.
So to everyone who is still on the porch get off, and do something.

High mileage
High mileage used to mean the amount of mileage you put on your car?
Now with this health kick and running( actually moving faster than normal), high mileage means how many miles can you run or jog for your training.
This week I made it to 30 miles, every other day 10 miles each run.
I fined that I really need to get the most mileage possible, as the stamina is the hardest to maintain at is age of 63.
Usually they say train to run 1/3 of race distance every other day, as your body will be able to respond to race day 3 times the miles?????????
Maybe at 25 that is true, but over 60 requires a totally different training criteria, as your body does not respond the same way or rebound like a 25 year old.
Build your stamina, and distance slowly.
Next week I work to get to 11 miles each run ( or moving faster than normal pace).
I need to get a tee shirt old guys rule?
That is all for now .

Ramping up
Ramping up has different connotations for different people.
Some it means having a ramp to walk up because they are out of shape, or even handicap.
Ramping up for me means doing something faster, harder, or both.
I am ramping up for the Detroit half marathon, I have increased my mileage to 10 miles every other day so that I can build my stamina.
I am ramping up for one of the biggest challenges I have faced in the athletic endeavor.
13.1 miles in under 3 hours, over the bridge, up hither and yon through Windsor and back through the tunnel and then through the streets of Detroit.
In thinking about how to ramp up my training, I came across a young fellow who was starting to exercise for the first time in years. Don't know why, but I suspect the. Fact he was over 600 lbs, had a lot to do with it. He was trying to walk around the same track we were practicing at.
I realized then that ramping up for a half marathon was nothing compared to what this young fellow was facing.
Te next time I went by him I said hey boss how you doing? He said hanging in there. The next time I went by I said good job keep it up. That got a smile and a nod and a thanks. That good job probably meant more to him than anything right then.
So the next time I moan about having to increase my mileage or dread heading out to train, I am going to think of that young man and get my ass in gear and go.
I hope I see him more often' as I will definitely continue to encourage him, and I hope he ramps it up to make his goals.

On the road again
I am back to my training schedule, I currently run 7 to 9 miles three days a week, and am building to 10 to 15.
I understand that it does not sound much to a regular marathoner, but going on 63 , I think 20 to 30 miles a week is excellent.
The Detroit international half marathon is a couple of month away, and I want to make a good showing. My first half marathon I came in at 2 hours 58 mins. I would like to better than time by at least one minute?
Each of us needs goals, and the only goal I have been able to set up that is remotely achievable, is running and health.
I guess a lot of people would love to be able to attain those goals.
However, when you have been at the pinnacle of success and then lost it all, it is hard to fight back to that high level of energy and goals.
I believe that one day I will get there, however, I do not see that happening in the near future, as the economy and job picture keeps making it harder for seniors to compete and prosper.
I think it is time for a change, Barack has not made it happen and I am disappointed in his efforts?
We need a stron fiscally conservative to straitened things out in our government.
So to all you liberal type, sorry I am going with Mitt.
Actually, it probably make no difference what I say, no one reads this blog anyway, but I get to spout off whatever I feel like.

Sorry for the long layoff, I have been contemplating the name of my blog and its usefulness?
Living and prospering at over 60.
I think I have the living part down, but the prospering part is a little hard to get a handle on.
I an prospering at the health and wellness stuff, although we have 12 weeks to the international Detroit Marathon, and I am 6 weeks behind in my training.
That's all I got today

Towboat US Saves sailboat off Ecorse shore
July 4th hot humid and plenty of sun. Until around five in the afternoon when the storms started firing up and roaring through.
What started as a peaceful day for a sail boater, turned deadly as he headed up river towards Detroit. Just after passing mud island, he turned around to avoid heading into a storm. He made the wise decision to head back to safer water, however, he seemed to realize he would not make it so he turn around centering the boat in the channel and putting it's head into the wind. great decision, except he was a little off course and was blown into a sand bar and grounded. As he was trying to get off the sand bar, trying everything from putting up the sails to gunning his engine, along came a tow boat from boat US. the tow boat headed his way and managed to get a line on the front of the sailboat. For about a half hour the tow boat struggled to try and pull him out, but to no avail.
Right about then they both realized that the main part of the storm was about to hit them. The tow boat turned into the eye of the storm, and kept a steady pull on the sailboat to keep it upright and into the wind.
Its a good thing, because at that point, 50 mile per hour winds and the full furry of the storm hit.
We were on our porch, due west of the scene, and as the storm blew through, we lost sight of the vessels as the rain and wind tore down West Jefferson. the storm raged for what seemed like hours, but was probably only 20 to 30 minutes. As the storm started to abate, we gradually were able to see the two boats again. the tow boat was still doggedly keeping the sailboat into the wind, and the sailboat was still upright and stuck.
Soon after, the sun came out and another tow boat who was obviously called showed up, and they soon had the sailboat ungrounded and on its way.
The story has a happy ending, but my wife and I both think that the tow boat operator saved the lives of those on board the sailboat as the storm would have surely capsized the grounded boat. the tow boat captain will probably go unrecognized, but those of us who witnessed the whole show understand how much jeopardy the tow boat captain put his life in danger to save the sailboat.
Yes it was his job, but in this instance he went above and beyond the call of duty.
Great job captain.

looking For a Job at over 60
I have been looking for a job to supplement my retirement, and get back into the work force.
Why you ask? A number of reasons, the main one being that our government can't fix the economy, and all the prices keep rising, taking a large bite out of our scarce resources call pension.
So how is the job hunnting going?
Well, I am finding that most companies totally ignore you if there appears to be any age factor involved, and with 34 years experience and a master's degree that is the case with me.
I am amazed at how often companies and how many ways a company can find to discriminate against older people trying to re-enter the workforce.
You say ! what they can't discriminate? Well true, however, what is 100 % rejection rate where they tell you they decided to go in another direction, or that you were considered but thanks for applying?
Discrimination is taking place for older job seekers at an alarming rate, they now only look at your resume if you currently have a job? How is that not discrimination? Also, the only look at your resume if you have a current degree graduation date, and limited employment experience? How is that not discrimination?
Well, in business today, none of those examples that go on are called discrimination.
Today they call it slective marketing of new employees.

We are back to having control over our time?
After four weeks ( my wife insists it was only 2 weeks) of babysitting the grand kids, taking the mother in law back and forth from the hospital to home, we finally have control over our own days.
I say this as the phone rings an another commitment appears ??? @#^&*%%###@$@!!!!!
Today we( my wife and I) started back into our exercise program and training, for the 13.1 Detroit half marathon in October. We are hoping that we can get into a regular program and increase our mileage and stamina.
After three weeks off, I did 4 miles in 50 minutes, it felt like 40 miles in 5 hours???
My body feels like I ran to Toledo and back? It is going to be a long road back to where I was when I did the CF River half marathon in march.
Everyone tells us, that you take the date of your run, and back up 12 weeks and start training. What they forget to tell you, is that that schedule is for some one between 20 and 40. At 62, there is a whole different set of needs for the body to build up to the run or 13.1. Not withstanding, the motivation to get out there and commit to the time requirements? And how do you do that when everyone wants to involve you in what ever?
Well we both started today, and it felt good to get back to some exercise, and I hope we can keep the program going?
The race is a big factor in my wanting to continue running, however the side effects of having a more healthier life is really starting to be the main focus of my exercise.
I feel so much better when I get three to four days of great exercise, and I am more than mentally prepared to deal with everything as well.
Exercise is starting to be a goal in its self now! Wow I never thought me the world's consummate couch potato would ever get to this point.
I guess you can teach old big dogs new tricks.

How to keep going when the motivation is gone
How do we keep going when the motivation is gone or at least lagging.
I am not sure, if anyone has any ideas let me know.
I do know that throughout life you have highs and lows, rain and sunshine.
Right now must be a low monsoon season, as I am struggling to get back to training and feeling good.
So starting after we are done with the kids babysitting, I will have to get going if I wish to finish the International Detroit half Marathon.

Sad news for Detroit Sports :-(
Saint Nick has retired!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Never again are we going to see as great a player as Nick Lidstrom.
I feel exceedingly sad that I will not get to see him take the ice again at the Joe, and thousands of young fans will only get to see him in news clips.
Only time will tell if the new young players will compete at as high a level, I have hopes for Brendan Smith, maybe he will be our next Nick Lidstrom.
Good luck Nick Thanks for the memories.

Keep On Keeping On
As we get older, it is harder and harder each day to keep up and keep on!
Fact of life, in today's society, there is a dearth of negative news and negative policies that adversely impact the seniors and make it harder and harder to get by and enjoy any sense of peaceful retirement.
The government has specialized in taking money from the boomers for so many years, they can't stop. It is like an addiction, tax the baby boomers because they are the ones with the money?
I hate to say this, but the ones taxing us to death and pushing for more more more, are the ones that have been in congress and the senate for too long, and cannot seem to get themselves a real job? They have been sponging off us for so long that they feel it is there right?
You know what! any congressman or woman or senator who has been in office more than 10 years is addicted to our money?
They need to get off the taxpayer dollar, we have provide you a free ride for to long.
How can we the boomers who built the middle class, and worked for 30 to 40 years enjoy ourselves in retirement with everyone wanting our money?
Governor Snidley, and President No Bama stop !!!!!!!!!!!!!
Leave us alone, we have more than shared our part, and just because you can tax us, does not mean it is right to do so.

Keep going
To many times do we stop what we are doing because it is too hard, not enough reward, or just because we are tired.
As we get older, we have to fight the urge to quit, and lay back and relax.
Yes there is a time and a place for relaxing, but not in everyday living.
In today's economy, and today's world, there is too much bad news, and not enough good news.
Well, I guess we have to make our own good news.
As they say, any day above ground is a good day !
So even if we are feeling that it is too hard, lets keep pushing ourselves, because we are the only ones who can determine if the effort was reward enough.
Daily living can be a chore, but daily not living is not a good alternative.

Target Rich Environment
We have all heard how the Police Chief of the city of Detroit and some of the Council members want the gas stations, liquor stores and those stores open 24 hours to provide security?
Tell me this, are these guards authorized to use deadly force? Can they shoot someone who is trying to carjack someone?
Does anyone else out there find this as offensive as I do?
What is a Target Rich environment?
How about anyone who wears nice clothes?
Has Jewelry on?
How about anyone driving a nice car?
Are these not all target rich environments?
Basically then we should all have armed guards with us, at the very least all of us should car guns openly.
So if all that happens, why do we need police?
Take everything further, outsource the fire and EMS.
OK why have a City Council or Mayor, as we all are becoming responsible to provide security, safety, and medical needs for ourselves.
Do these city officials THINK before they speak??????
WOW !!!!!!!
How stupid and inane are these people.
Correct me if I am wrong, but is it not the mayor, council, police, and city officials jobs to protect and serve the citizens?
take care and check back later to see if I have been the victim of being a target rich environment?

So if all that happens, why do we need police?
Take everything further, outsource the fire and EMS.
OK why have a City Council or Mayor, as we all are becoming responsible to provide security, safety, and medical needs for ourselves.
Do these city officials THINK before they speak??????
WOW !!!!!!!
How stupid and inane are these people.
Correct me if I am wrong, but is it not the mayor, council, police, and city officials jobs to protect and serve the citizens?
take care and check back later to see if I have been the victim of being a target rich environment?

Back on the Road Again
After taking a month off form the last 1/2 marathon, I am training again. so far 22 miles in may. I am going to try and start getting up to speed, and hopefully get to 22 miles per week.
I find that the break has done me some good, as my old bones and joints need time to recuperated.
We do not heal as fast as we get older, so I am going to build up slowly to my training mileage, and try to sprinkle in some 5 k races during the summer to help keep the competition going.
I think that even as we age, we need competition and goals to focus on. If we don't have any, we lose our sense of purpose and will to go on.
So I hope everyone take this to heart, pick a goal and work towards it. make it something that will help your health and well being. lose weight, start exercising, and just do it????

Mother's day for the Boomers
Most of us take Mothers day for granted. However, have you ever wondered what it is like for the Baby Boomers?
First, most of us have mothers still living, and have wives who are mothers themselves, as well as children who are mothers.
Wow, minimum three generations of mothers in the average Boomer family.
So how does it work with so many mothers?
First, we have to visit our mothers, either at home, in a nursing home or hospital.
Some of our mothers remember who we are, and some don't?
That does not mean we love them any less, it just means you have to love them more due to their infirmities.
Second, then our wives have to have a day with the kids who want to appreciate them for their efforts. This generally involves a lot of mother daughter bonding, usually in a beauty salon or spa.
The daughters are usually starting to realize how hard their mothers had it, as they have small kids they are responsible for now.
Third our children have a party sponsored by their kids, and generally means ice cream and cake.
It would be nice if we could get everyone together, but that is not practical as some are out of state or even out of country, and lives are more fast pace now than they have ever been.
All this visiting and making time for these celebrations, can sometimes seem like a hastle and we resent it.
We must step back and remember, we definitely would like it a lot less if even one of these three generations is not around for a mother's day celebration.
So happy Mothers day Mom ( great grandma), Mom ( grandma), and Mommy (mom).

Get it Done Quick Rick vs Govenor Snidley
I read a new nickname for our state's Governor in the paper (News Herald of course).
The nickname was Get it Done Quick Rick.
I feel slighted, as I have been promoting Governor Snidley, named after the evil villain in Dudley DO Right cartoons, Snidley Whiplash.
However, after further review, the ruling on the field is, " there is cause to have both nicknames used."
Snidley for the evil things he does to Seniors and in general Michigan residents, and Quick Rick for the way he circumvents the legislature and looks for ways to usurp the rights of Michigan citizens by taking away their rights to vote on and collectively decide what is best for Michigan.
Did anyone see his on line town hall? funny, I have heard nothing of this event in the media?
I asked a few pointed questions, like where are the jobs he promised, and when is he going to give the seniors back there money he stole, seeing as the state has a surplus?????
Funny no response to those questions.
Gas is still rising, groceries are still out of sight, and in general we are not better off than when he was elected.
Seniors and young children are bearing the burden of his policies to enrich his buddies, and he still maintains he is doing the right stuff?
Well, what do you decide? How about a vote, Get it done Quick Rick, or Governor Snidley.
You decide?

Why do our Politicians and the Media lie to us?
Has anyone noticed that the politicians and media are trying to put the best slant on the economy these days?
Governor Snidley says that Michigan is rebounding???? What about Detroit, burning, massive debt, and 45% unemployment and about to get worse.
They say the housing market is recovering? Why do the numbers say the worst housing market since the great depression?
Unemployment is getting better? Why are there so many people who have dropped out of the job market? Why are new college grads 50 % unemployed and or underemployed? What about the veterans who come back from Afghanistan to unemployment?
Is it me or is there a conspiracy to moderate the news, and try to present a good front during and election year?
Last I looked, gas was still 43.75 per gallon, milk has sky rocketed, groceries are out of sight. Insurance is going up.
OK so maybe I am missing something critical here?????
Oh yeah my pension DID NOT GO UP !!!!!!!!!!!! in fact Governor Snidley decide I have too much money and now he wants it???????
You know what, I just wish he would come around and personally stick a gun in my back and take my wallet, that way I would feel like I was worthy of personal attention.
He needs to be an honest stickup man not a sleazy back room deal kind of guy he has turned out to be.
So why did we vote him in? Because he promised hope and change?? ( sound familiar )
What we got was his hope to take his agenda and pay off his buddies, and the way he did it was to take everything from us including our spare change.
Hey Snidley !!!!!! where are the JOBS ????, Where are the benefits to Michigan?????
So why does the media and politicians lie to us?
Because they think we are stupid and they know what is best for us?
You know what? give me my money back and get out of my way I think I can figure out for myself where to best spend my money, and it certainly is not in bigger government spending.
We do not need another Bridge to nowhere? ( Canada same thing as no where), it only helps trucking from Mexico to Toronto no need to stop in Detroit.

Wow, Detroit Fire Chief says let the city burn???
Well, not really, he said if an abandoned house is more than 50% burned when they get there, they should let if finish burning to the ground. Note, he said if no people are in danger, and no other structures that have people in them is involved.
This plan while it may anger some, makes a loot of sense. Detroit has lost over 200,000 people in the last 10 years, and the people who walked away, have left their old homes to rot.
Detroit is not the only city to encounter this same situation, Ecorse and River Rouge have abandoned houses that need to be torn down.
I am just not sure burning them down to the ground is the answer.
How about the corp of engineers? the US government's trained demolition and building group come into Detroit and surrounding communities and help tear down abandoned buildings and homes.
Might be a plan? All though you might want to run it by Lane Blanton in Allen Park to see if it helps innocent motorcyclists?????? :-) ha ha ha ha ha just a joke, Lane is a fan of mine who hates my blog and calls it irresponsible? He focus in on a specific part of an issue and only see his side? What is the saying? can't see the forest for the trees?
Well at least I had one person read my blog.

Helmet law and impact on seniors
So what you say/ most of us don't ride much or anymore.
Well, what about the fact your car insurance will be going up to pay for all the idiots who ride without a helmet and get brain damage and are vegetables and we the taxpayers have to support them?
May I should say further brain damage.
How about the law should define what happens to them when they get head injuries?
How about they must be mandatory organ donors, (that the way I think of anyone riding without a helmet anyway).
They also must have an insurance policy tattooed to their forehead that gives them $10 million dollars for head trauma?
Governor Snidely and his cohorts are fools if they think that this won't impact the seniors? How about the announcement that each car insurance will go up by at least $60.00 per vehicle possibly more?
So the next time you see a rider without a helmet, ask them if they are an organ donor? If they say no tell them to get signed up as it is a matter of time before they become one.
What a bunch of smucks???
That is the riders and politicians.
Take care don't hit an organ donor, because you will be sued.

Michigan Taxes and Appeals
Once again it is time for the tax tribunal dance. the homeowner has an appraisal that costs them $450, and the city county and state get together and try to predetermine how much they are going to increase your taxes?
The burden of proof they say falls to the home owner???? How is the equality and reasonableness?
The City, County and State have unlimited resources and are in cahoots together to make sure your taxes are as high as they can possible make them, while the home owner, generally a senior on a fixed income is stuck with the bill.
I think everyone should pay their fair share, however, with all the corruption at the city and county level, it seems that home owners are getting the brunt of the tax burden.
How do you fight it?
I spoke with a home owner that wants to remain anonymous says they just stopped paying their real estate taxes, and it takes years for the city or county to foreclose? Even then if you pay a little, they will not foreclose.
They have been doing this for 6 years and there is no end in sight.
While i do not advocate this, is does seem reasonable, if you are a senior, and own your home, and really don't need credit, then it seems like a reasonable approach.
Good for those that have figured a way around the system.

Injury time out
The last two weeks have been terrible? I have been unable to run due to the heel that I tore up during the Rock CF rivers half marathon.
Ism almost ready to lace up the shoes again, another few days.
It is amazing how much I actually look forward to my runs. I can not imagine how a professional deal with a major injury?
I don't do injury very well
The more I think about it I realize that at this age it will take longer to heal.
Now what? I am going to have to deal with it, and make sure I take more care with my traing,
Next major event is October. Detroit half marathon, another week an I start traing over,
Low and slow. I need to increas my endurance and lower injury.
It sucks to be old, but it beats the alternative.

What Good are Grandparents??
Someone who gives unconditional love.
Someone who provides a role model other than parents.
Someone who takes their side of things and who understands.
Someone who feeds them sugar before going home to parents.
Someone who has a penny jar that they get to pull a hand full of pennies from.
Someone who coach's in their sports programs.
Someone who goes to their school concerts.
Someone who provides good advice when they get older.
Someone who gives their parents a break from the stress of kids.

Sense of Satisfaction
It has been a few days since I ran the Rock CF Rivers 1/2 marathon, and I have had a chance to rehash and review my race.
Actually I think I did fantastic, and I am proud of my self.
It has been a long grueling road to be able to make it to the finish line.
The sense of satisfaction seems greater now, as I think about my accomplishment.
Everyone needs to feel this type of acomplishment.
If everyone had attainable goals and worked as hard to achieve them, then maybe we would not be in such a state of moral decline in our city and state.
Young people need attainable goals, and they need to have hopes and dreams. (they can't be allowed to run the streets destroying things they do not have)
Yet so do seniors, however their dreams and goals maybe more attuned to their situation in life. ( they can not be left to languish in a nursing home with nothing to look forward to.)
Do I have an answer?????
NO ! sorry just more questions.
I hope someone comes up with the answer soon, before we loose Detroit !!!!!

Why Out Run CF
Short and Simple, I had three children with CF.
Kristie died at age 12, Kimberly at age 22 (they were twins), and Brett died at age 28.
They were witty children and had great spirit.
However, as Kristie told me when i sat crying at her bedside " dad why are you sad, I answered i will miss you! She responded why ? I am only a thought away"
This 13.1 was for you guys.
Love dad

CF Rock half marathon "Finishing is a Major Victory"
Over a year ago, I started out with a 5 k walk run for Cystic Fibrosis on Grosse Ille, the Rock CF half marathon / 5 k race.
Last year I ran the 5 k or I really should say moved faster than normal for 5 k. I did it in a time of 44.5 minutes.
this year I have run numerous 5 k's , and got my time down to 35 minutes. However the real benefit is the 45 pounds of weight I lost, and the reduction in all the medication I used to take for high blood pressure etc.
This year my goal was to run a half marathon, and I have been training for the Rock CF Half Marathon which I ran yesterday.
I have done a number of 13.1 training runs, and hoped to come in under three (3) hours. best i have done in training is 2 hours 49 mins.
Yesterday started out as a beautiful day for a run, and right at 7:30 the gun went off. I started out at a nice easy pace, low and slow, the tortoise strategy. at 3.1 miles I was 34 minutes??? wow record for me. At 5 miles I was 58 minutes, again a record for me. at 7 miles I was 1 hr 25 minutes great pace.
Then the monster mountain rose up from mile 7 to mile 8 a gentle slow climb up hill for a mile. So when they say the course is flat and fast? I guess it is on average flat and fast? however, that 1 mile up hill took something out of me. At mile 10, I was still at my pace, 2 hours 6 mins. Then disaster struck, I had a blister problem on my right heel that had been developing from mile 8, and it broke open and started to bleed.
I stopped , put a bandage on it, but if you ever had a blister, you know how hard it is to walk. I kept going, my only goal was to finish???. I started favoring my right foot, and developed a hitch in my gate. Somewhere along the East river road of Grosse Ille, my right knee joint fell out? At least that is what it seemed like at the time. that was at mile 12.
The Last mile from 12 to 13 was very pain full to say the least.
However, I limped in to the high school stadium and was greeted by my wife and step daughter cheering me on. I mounted one last bit of strength and determination, and I crossed the finish line at 2 hours and 58 minutes.
Not bad for an 63 year old previously fat guy.
Well, what is the next challenge??? My wife Brenda and I are registered for the October Detroit International half marathon. Where the bridge climb will be like running up a mountain, and the riverside run in Windsor is up and down, culminating in a 1.2 mile run through the tunnel, again, 1/2 of that up hill. then through downtown Detroit to finish.
What is my goal for this run??? number 1 finish, number 2 finish, number 3 finish??? get the picture?
Finish and survive.

First half marathon tomorrow
Ok, I am as ready as I will ever be, I have logged alot of miles, and spent this week recuperating from a blistered heel.
My goal is to finish, and see what type of work I have left to do for the detroit 1/2 marathon in the fall.
I will let you know in a couple of days how I did, and where do I go from here?
It has been a long road from 250 pounds, to 210, and running 1 mile to 13.1.
I feel great, and think I have accomplisjed alot.
That is the true reward, even though I know I will be a t the back of the pack, last year I could not have been in the pack at all.
This is what living and propspering is all about.
The feel good story of the year.

Keeping your sanity when the world crashes around you?
How do you keep your sanity when the world seems to be crashing around us?
Seniors especially need something to boost their morale and keep them in the game.
Why you say just seniors? It is easy, seniors have worked their whole life, expecting to be able to relax in their golden years????
Then along comes Governor Snidely who says lets help business by taxing the senior pensions.
You say it's only 4.35 % and it should not be a big deal? yeah but the price of gas is now $4. per gallon, and soon to be $5 per gallon, food has gone up, the taxes on their paid for small homes are still high, and they don't get a cost of living allowance.
If a senior owns their own home, in downriver, they are paying minimum $500 per month in real estate taxes, $250 - $300 for car registration, and another $250 per month on car insurance, probably $250 per month medical premiums.
Basically you have $1000, per month going out to taxes and insurance? what about the gas and groceries and utility bills??
How much of a seniors pension do you think they get to spend on fun sanity building items???
Not much, so what needs to be done?
Well first vote the idiots that are trying to tax us out of office, second, find an outlet that relieves stress and build self confidence.
I started entering 5 k races, now I am up to my first 13.1 half marathon? So what you say? I say yeah, it gives me a goal, makes me feel good to accomplish something, and it is improving my health.
All this is designed to keep me sane and help me get through the troubled economy that we can do nothing to prevent.
This won't work for all, but the point is to find something you feel passionate about, bowling, golf ( wait no fun money) Crocheting, knitting, walking, volunteering etc.
Get off the couch and run with the big dogs.

Protecting your loved ones in a Nursing home
Recently, we have had to get my mother in law into a nursing home for some ongoing therapy so that she can continue to live at home.
I thought that this would be no big deal, and a few weeks of therapy she would be home?
Not so, their is a tremendous amount of bureaucracy involved, and they want to get as much money out of the families and the medicaid as possible.
We naively thought that my wife could stop in once every other day and see how she was progressing???
Yeah right!!!!!
Like any corporation, they are paramount in protecting themselves, and making sure you can't blame them for anything?
They miss communicate, and tell my mother in law conflicting orders?
My wife has ended up going every day, and over see what is being done, and trying to correct the miss communication, so that her 86 year old mother can fully understand what she is supposed to be doing.
They constantly call my wife and have her over for meetings where one person says one thing and the other says something else???
Bottom line???? If you want your loved ones safe, even in a reputable nursing home, you need to be there and oversee what is going on.
Ok ranted enough, going for a run with my wife so she can relax and forget about agravation for a few hours.
take care and check back later.

Training and Working
I have been training for the March 25th Rock CF 1/2 marathon, as well as working for a tax service preparing individual tax filings.
I ran 13 miles yesterday, as a final tune up for the 1/2 on march 25. 10 miles in 2 hours 6 mins, for me great. However, had a bad sock and ended with a major blister for the last 3 miles #$^%& took me the complete 3 hours to finish due to blister, had to walk slow?
Today I get up for work, and hurt like h___ all over, I do great to 10 miles then seem to fall apart.
Oh well, at least I get to sit at a desk and let my foot and knees heal for a few days.
I think I will only do a few short runs 5 to 8 miles every other day until the a few days before the event.
Anyway to the point of the title? training and working sucks, I would rather be training only, but Govenor Snidley has forced me back to work because of his regressive taxation on seniors.
I will definitely not be voting for him again. Boy he sucked a lot of us in????
take care and check back later I will probably have more rants.

Health Insurance ( or the lack of )
I realize, that I have health insurance, and I think it should pay for medicine and doctors etc???
I pay alot each month for this benefit.
However, I find out that I have a $1200. deductible, and a 30% co pay and must pay $ 50 dollars per prescription?
Blue cross also says I must have an annual physical and complete a worthless online program after the physical or I will be penalized with a 40% copay????????
The physical is one you could give your self, they pay for your blood pressure test, and a bend over and cough feel good test? ( if you did it your self you would probably enjoy it more).
ANYHOW, the purpose of this rant is to let you know how useless our insurance is and how screwed up the government new plans have messed with our costs.
I was told I need a colonoscopy????? FUN STUFF huh?
I asked how much?
Doctor's office said your co pay plus 30 % ? OK $1200. plus 30 5 of what I ask?
30 % of all costs?? OK what are the costs? I can't tell you, because I don't know what the hospital will charge, the anaesthesiologist will charge, or what the lab will charge, or what any random doctor who happens to walk by and stick his head in the door ( or his hand some place) will charge????????
So who can tell me? They suggest blue cross???? have you ever tried calling and asking for this type of information? I called Monday, it is Saturday , and I am still on hold?
Nearest I can figure is if I want someone to shove a tube up my butt and scope it out, I need to pay the hospital 30 % of all their costs that they make up? 100 syringes, box of cotton swabs? 10 nurses who you will never see, 3 anaesthesiologists, 10 random doctors, and 100 xrays and $50 for pictures of your rectum?
OK so a random number is anywhere from $3000 to $25,000 ??????
I wonder if I can get it done on the Internet? A virtual colonoscopy?
They are some other crude options I can come up with, but i will leave them to your imagination?
Bottom Line ( no pun intended) . If I don't know how much it will cost and no one can tell me? What the H_LL am I supposed to do? the bank won't give me a line of credit?
I guess I will just have to go to harbor freight and buy an in line camera scope mechanics use for $35.00 and a jar of Vaseline and see if I can do it myself?
This seems like when I was working for the Evil Empire, the boss was always doing something like this to you, so I guess it should of prepared me for retirement health care problems.
Now I know why most seniors are cranky???? They are tired of people trying to stick it to them more ways then one ( thank you governor Snidlyer than thou, and barack Nobama).
I need to go for a run to work out my anger, as I can't afford to get sick, even mentally???
However, I have always considered myself a part time visitor to reality. this is just another reason to continue that way at least until the voices come?
Take care and check back later I will let you know who is trying to stick it to me later.

Primary Voting for Seniors
After listening to both side of the argument, i think that neither party need to be elected again.
They have both done a rotten job, and unfortunately we are taking the hits, in gas, food, and higher health care, as well as higher taxes.
SO if you consider voting, do what my father used to suggest.
VOTE EARLY AND OFTEN
:-)
Going to take today off from running, need to allow my knee to recover?
Maybe just an 8 mile walk no pounding.

Going to have to start 8 on Tuesday, 10 on Thursday and a full 13.1 on sat.
the other days I will work on strengthening my knees.

Michigan politics and Gray Days
I wrote a post awhile ago about why to stay in Michigan? Not alot of reasons, and when I wake up and it is cold 19 degrees wind chill even colder?????
I want to run today but the weather is too cold for this old body? I will wait until tomorrow at least if I can have sun and cold it helps.
For today I sit and watch the news CNN and FOX, catch up with Michigan politics.
A gray day is like Michigan politics, no one likes them.
Highland Park has pay less pay days now, Detroit DOT stopping night time and weekend buses?
Romney and Santorum beating each other up, Ron Paul and Newt not even campaigning in Michigan?
See even Newt and Ron know that Michigan is not a worthy state??? It will go to obama in a general election, as the unions and democrats control Michigan in all general elections. After all, we have had senators and congressmen and women who are reelected for centuries even though they contribute to the bad economy and deficits. SPEND SPEND SPEND?????
Who can blame the people of Michigan, their pay has dropped, the food stamp program has gone away, the welfare has gone away, and more people are hurting.
CRIME is totally out of control, 9 month old babies being killed by AK47's, 86 year old war veterans being car jacked and beaten????
Unemployment regardless of what the liberal press and white house say in Michigan is 20 to 25 % . for seniors over 50 it is 60%, young people 35 %.
When are the politicians going to get it right!!!!!!
They work for us and need to concentrate on JOBS JOBS JOBS.
We cannot have a growing strong Michigan until the JOBS come back.
WHO IS GOING TO HELP?????? I do not see anyone in current politics who can or will help.
I think we are in for more Gray days and years in Michigan.
take care and check back later.

Snow Sweet Snow
Actually, I like snow, just not when I have to do a 10 mile run?
Today I was scheduled for my 10 mile run this week, and with the snow and rain, I ended up postponing my run until tomorrow.
This actually gives me a chance to catch up on a few things around the house, and allows us to go see the grand kids.
Tomorrow looks like it will be decent to run.
For the rest of today, I am going to check out the news and things happening in and around the Ecorse area.

Running in the Cold
OK, it is amazing how much you forget how cold affects you when running, after only a month away.
I have been running 5 miles Mondays, 7 on Wed, and 10 on Fridays. then every other day upper body work outs.
So to day I went for my 5 mile run???????? Forgot my neck gator, forgot how cold 25 is, forgot how to breath in the cold, and forgot how cold affects my knees.
Barely survived, and I thought I was doing really well?
I need to ramp up my cold weather running if i want to finish my 1st 13.1 in march.
Going to be a challenge.
I finished my 5 miles, at the 61 minute mark, which is about average for me, and a good pace for older run/ walkers like myself.
Today reminded me that I am not a runner....... I am a moves faster than normal type of guy.
My goal for the Rock CF is to finish, be nice if under 3 hours.

Home and Cold
Well, we are back and had a great time in Florida. Did a lot of training for the upcoming 1/2 marathon for CF Rocks in March.
Nice every morning to get up and go for a run, 65 to 70 degrees at 9am.
NOW getting ready for my first run back here? 19 degrees at 7am , only 27 by 10:30 ???/ WOW a shock to the system.
Going to take it easy until I get used to cold weather running again.
It is amazing that in one month I got used to always nice weather.
Oh well this is Michigan.
Take care check back later and I will let you know my progress.

Running shoes for older feet
I have been through a number of shoes as I have continued my running career ( all 14 months of it). One thing I find, is that the shoe that used to fit, no longer fits properly.
So what is my advice?
Go to a true running store and ask them to recommend a shoe for your foot. make sure you get a 15 day running trial.
Then go out and run in it. I have just destroyed a pair of Asics, and they destroyed my foot, so I went back to Brooks. however, the Brook glycerin 9 is a good shoe but the fit is different this year?
So I am heading back to the store after putting 15 miles on these and finding all sorts of pressure points. My next try will be the Mizuno wave 13, I have red good thing about it? I will let you know after the next 15 miles.
the moral is make sure you can get a 15 day trial run in your new shoes, and make sure you use it. Take them back if they don't feel right.

Why to stay in Michigan if you are over 60
I have given this alot of thought, and when we came to Florida this year I wondered why would anyone want to move here?
There is always plenty of sunshine, moderate temperature during the gray Michigan winters, and lots of opportunity for physical activity.
So why stay in Michigan?
Only reason I can see is that that is where the family is? Especially the grand kids. hopefully when our Son and his wife (in North Carolina) have grand kids, we can move closer, or have more opportunity to get to know those grand kids and have them get to know and love us.
So the answer to the question?
Certainly not the economy, or not the taxes applied to seniors so that business can go out of state to hire (see previous post).
Certainly it is not the weather in the winter, as gray should only be for the hair not the sky for 6 months.
I guess I will have to be satisfied with the family answer? until I hit the lottery and can afford to fly my family to where I want to live on a regular basis.

Michigan Governor and Politicians that have no clue?
This is a letter I sent to Governor Synder and a few other politicians, and everyone should know and be as outraged as I am.
Michigan companies seeking employees out of state???
Wednesday, February 8, 2012 9:10 AM
I can't believe what I am seeing in Florida? Michigan Job fairs in Florida, advertising for jobs at Chrysler and Quicken loans?
How can anyone in Michigan politics condone such behavior when we have such a high rate of unemployment in Michigan?
Is it possible that you people in government have no Idea what is happening in our state and how employers are reacting?
Feb 18 in Daytona Florida a job fair for jobs in Michigan?????
People in government, wake up you are not doing something right if two of our main industries are going out of state to hire people?
Please don't tell me there are no qualified people in Michigan?
This is unacceptable?
I will suggest that we need to get rid of all our current government who would allow something like this to happen?
It suggests that you do not have your fingers on the pulse of Michigan. this looks like Michigan is going into cardiac arrest and you people are standing around with a dumb look on your faces.

Training for a 13.1 half marathon
I have been reading a lot of blogs, and articles about training for a 1/2 marathon, however, they all seem to be geared to younger people, and do not take into consideration anyone over 50.
I have signed up for two 1/2 marathons, one in March, one in October.
I have been increasing my mileage every week, and can now make a 13.1 mile 1/2 marathon.
How?
Glad you asked.
Number one, start by walking, then jogging and then walking. continue this as long as you can.
Number two, set real goals, ie walk run for 1/2 hour, then walk run for 1 hour, until you can do this for three hours.
Number three, don't worry about how fast you run , just make sure you keep a good pace while walking. do not slow down to a crawl. Push yourself during the walking periods, as that will actually increase your time for the whole race.
Number four, make sure you do this a minimum of 3 days per week.
Number four, do not do a complete 13.1 every time you go. Start with a 1/2 hour walk run, goal to be 2 1/2 miles in 30 minutes. then do a 1 hour walk run, try to work up to 5 miles in 1 hour. Then then the last run/ walk of the week should be for a minimum of 2 hours, try to make 10 miles, or even the 13.1.
Number five, do not listen to younger people on your exercise needs. they don't get the lack of breath or sore muscles and joints thing?
Number six. keep at it even if you can't reach the times I suggested. base the times on what you can do, and try to better them each time out, even if by 1 minute. It still helps.
Number seven, keep you motivation strong, I started a year ago, and I am just getting to the stages I mentioned, so take heart it works.

I have watched all the debates, and have come to the conclusion, that I am really tired of the media dredging up issues to get the candidates angry and influencing the debates by not allowing for rational discussion of the issues.
The media has it's perspective, which is to make ratings and contentious debates help ratings.
Fine, but I am tired of them thinking we the public are too stupid to know which ads are bogus, and which adds are appropriate.
I don't care what some bimbo x wife has to say, just like I don't care what some wife of 40 years has to say. They are not running.
So to the media, liberal CNN and ABC, and conservative Fox, stop trying to influence public opinion. Your job is to report not pontificate and try to influence people to your views.
A debate is supposed to allow the American public to decide which candidate has the better plan to help this struggling economy.
Shame on CNN for trying to embarrass Newt and Mitt into trading innuendo as opposed to letting them debate the merits of each others plan.
CNN is just pist off that Newt went after them for stupid questions and embarrassed John King, so Wolf has to try and get back at Newt on behalf of his buddy?????
CNN started the show denigrating Newt on national TV? How fair is that? they are showing their true liberal spirit and are trying to influence people away from the republican candidates.
Sorry, but we the American people are smart enough to figure out who is doing the job and who is not>
Let the candidate debate, be they liberal or conservative, I want to hear what they say.

Timeshare Investments
Timeshare investments, are the worst thing in the world, don't do it if you ever find yourself on vacation and pressured.
There used to be away around the horrid pricing schemes in the US.
Originally, they charged you 5000. to 10,000 to own, they you paid 500 to 600 yearly maintenance fees. This locked you in to going on vacation the same time and teh same week every year to the same place.
I found that if you bought a South african time share from redweek.com, or tug, you could pick up a red week at 500, with maintenance fees at 150 US $. It takes time and then you have to bank them with RCI or II.
You used to be able to use your timeshares all over the world. NOW, they have devalued the timeshares from South Africa or other countries, so that now the are no longer valued at teh redweek status of the US timeshares. Basically you would have to buy 2 to 3 weeks in south africa to get 1 week in the US. So it makes those timeshares as worthless as the US timeshares.
I thought I was the only one doing it, but apparently I was not alone? Oh well, it was good while it lasted.
I will do some more research to see if there is another way to make the timeshares a viable option

So are we tired of the gray and gloomy weather yet?
It is only Jan 15 Th, and we have only had about three days of the brutally cold weather.
Despite a seasonably warmer winter and lacking in snow, I still hear people complaining about the winter?
Let's look at the positive aspect of the weather we have had so far.
Heating costs are down, and people are saving a little money.
Runners are loving the mild weather, you do not have to layer up, and you don't over heat.
Spring is closer
Still can't stand it? Head to Florida, that's what we are doing? Going to go south for a month, and train and eat health and soak up the sunshine.
Get out of the gray gloomy Michigan weather, go somewhere there is sun.
Nothing helps motivate and keep you going and invigorates you like a prolonged dose of sunshine.
I will continue to blog from Florida, hopefully I will not aggravate too many people with news of sunshine and warmth while you are stuck in the gray.
We are scheduled to run the 13.1 CF ROCKS in march on Grosse Ille, so I need to train. It takes longer for this old body to get up to speed.
Take care and check back later.

Where is the help for Low Income Seniors
Hello again
I have been preparing taxes for the low income people in this area, and have noticed that the Snyder government has done every thing in its power to increase the taxes on senior retirement people.
The latest ruling by the Michigan Supreme Court has actually had a positive affect for retirement income.
"In its review of the pension tax, the Supreme Court ruled that the changes phasing out Michigan’s personal exemption were not constitutional as that violated a ban on a graduated income tax. All other provisions of the pension tax were allowed to stand. Somewhat ironically the result of the court’s ruling means that those individuals with more than $75,000 in retirement income, who would have otherwise paid the income tax on pensions, will be taxed less than originally expected because they will now be able to claim the exemption."
Score one for the people who built this state to a level of prosperity, and have looked forward to a retirement free of worry from the Government.
While I know this does not alleviate the retirement tax, it helps.

Continuing a Positive Attitude
Well, I spent the last 3 months learning a new skill.
I will now be a certified tax preparer, and have a part time job with one of the tax preparation companies.
I can't tell you which one, as it would not be fair.
So what has this to do with keeping a positive attitude?
Well, since I have been unemployed since 2008, it is nice to have a job again, even if it is part time. I am really looking as this is a learning experience and it will continue to increase my knowledge base, which is very important as you age.
Everyone must keep their interactive skills up, as well as continue to improve any skills, or build new skills. This will ultimately lead to having a better attitude when you are more confident.
The pay is not much, but it will help defray the raise in groceries and gas, so that also helps if you are not constantly worried how you will meet the bills.
If you are retired sitting at home in the cold gray Michigan months, it helps to have a purpose for getting up and getting out. I don't look at this job as being able to make me rich or bettering my finances, however, I do look at this job as being someting that will make me feel better about my self.
That alone is worth the time and effort gaining the knowledge. Besides, I can do my own taxes much better now, and save myself some more money.
Learn somthing new, and stay in the game, it will make you feel better in the long run.

WOW someone read my blog.... Outstanding
I was pleasantly surprised that someone actually read my blog and responded with a comment. I think the comment was not on target, but everyone is entitled to their thoughts.
It was relatively obvious that the reader thought that all retiree's are rich and spend all their time at the casinos spending their untold wealth frivolously.
Are there some that do that and have money? Yeah forsure, however, it has been my experience that the majority are trying to make ends meet and don't waste their money.
My main point was that the current Govenor and Legislature have their own agenda that seems targeted at the senior population of Michigan. I did not even mention what they are doing to the schools and our young children, that is another travesty best held for later.
Michigan was built by middle income working people who signed up for the long term to work hard, building companies, educating their children better than they were, and hopefully have a few dollars left over to retire with the prospect of enjoying themselves.
Governor Snyder seems to want to throw their sacrifice away as meaningless and not worthy of having a comfortable retirement in Michigan.
OK, so I say the govenor (lower case... lower class) is pushing seniors to leave the state.
It really seems that way, him and the president want everyone else to share the sacrifice???
OK thanks we get the point guys, anyone that can leave for greener pastures, go for it.
Anyone who can't... suck it up you will be targeted further, prepare for a few dinners of dog food.

Is the Govenor driving seniors to the poor house or the state line?
My understanding is the taxation of pensions is once again up in the air, and that the court has said it is age discrimination to not tax everyone the same?
If that is the case, do you meaning we the citizens have an opportunity to object and request that the entire matter be dismissed?
Please be aware that the pending taxation on senior pensions is a strong incentive for people to move from Michigan, as well as not move into Michigan.
We worked 34 years counting on some stability in our golden years and enjoy Michigan in our retirement? It is unconscionable that you( Govenor Snyder and Paul Clemente) would change the tax structure for those of us who have provided for a stable Michigan for quit a few years.
Now you are doing your best to get us to leave the state?
Please take the opportunity that the court has given you to abolish these plans and quit driving seniors to the poor house and state line.

Following My own Advice how hard can that be?
Happy new year to anyone reading?
I decided last year to start exercising, and have been pretty successful. I have entered 6 5 k races, and competed very well. I have also lost 45 pounds.
This year I decided to get a jump on the new year and started exercising and working out more. I also decided that this year would be a milestone year.
So what advice did I follow?
I signed up for Two 13.1 half marathon races. One in march on Grosse Ille, and the other is the international Detroit marathon.
Now comes the hard part I need to up my training and really push to be able to finish.
Notice I said finish, not compete for anything else but my own satisfaction and well being.
Ok....... that seems easy? Wow not ! It has been cold and raining, and hard to get motivated to run outside. Inside is only available at the Lifetime fitness, and there they limit treadmill time to 20 minute intervals??? how stupid is that? can't even get up a good pace or sweat.
Next I said pay attention to finances and money spending?
Number one, reduce this years tax liability? Ok paid off February tax bill in December so I can deduct this year? May work depending on other schedule A deductions. Good start?
Next i wrote emails to the state representatives and Governor and stated my opinion on their tax strategy for Michigan. In a nut shell I think it stinks and they are just more of the same crooked politicians that are only out for their own well being.
At least I voiced my opinion.
Now can I maintain this pace of following my own advice?
It has been real hard so far, It cost me money to pay tax bill early, and I had to make time to write letter and emails. Further, I am struggling to increase my exercise.
I guess it is not that easy to follow my own advice.
So if you are trying to follow my advice, Just keep trying, as it is not really that easy.
